Nature is healing and calming. The presence felt in nature in the interconnectedness of everything is incomprehensible intellectually. When we are too identified with our immediate surroundings, devices, and gadgets, it is difficult to picture this.
I live in New Delhi, which in the past couple of days has become one of the most polluted cities in the world. If you want to know what’s it like to live in a gas chamber, come to Delhi during winter. But today's rain brought some relief. I could hear the birds chirping. The air was relatively pleasant.
I took a walk in a nearby park about an hour ago. Walked for about half an hour and then sat down for meditation. At some point, deep restfulness emerged along with the feeling of being connected to everything. It rarely happens. But whenever it happens, it feels fresh, well-rested, and joyful, just as one wakes up in the morning.
Although the experience lasted only a couple of minutes, it was sufficient. The breath connected with the body, the expansion and contraction of the lungs, the rising and subsiding of the belly, the heartbeat, the feeling of expansion - the mind’s energy localized at a point dissipating and dissolving into the beautiful vastness. It was the most ordinary, yet extraordinary experience that is hard to put into words.
I can feel how difficult it is for me to describe this experience to you. The best word I can come up with is love. I know, It’s a poor attempt, but that’s the best I can do. It is impossible to describe love because there is no separation in love. The love of a person, which is based on appearances, is limited, but the love of Unity is immeasurable and infinite. It is tender, fragrant, and abundant.
I’m sitting on my chair and as I’m writing this short post, I still have that pleasant memory of what was felt in the park. My heart longs to go back again and sit there for a while, but it’s dark now and I also have to attend to my family.
At this point, I’m not concerned about the high pollution levels tomorrow or the day after, but I feel an immense gratitude towards nature. No matter how bad the circumstances are around us, healing is always close by, and it can be found in the simplest of things.
Love,
Jagjot
